"In these days of singer songwriter girls of the
Tori Amos variety and Juliana Hatfield solo albums
Jennifer Moore should be a household name.
Single Bass is Jennifer Moore, she sings, writes
and plays everything... everything is in fact a
rather wonderfully simple bass and a golden and
delicate voice. Suzanne Vega has hit singles
that are nowhere near this good. ....
Delicate voice, fragile, almost vulnerable,
yet very confident, innocent yet worldly ....
You have to be a really talented composer to
write things this simple. It's a relaxing,
soothing thing yet the songs are, on the whole,
crafted so well that they hold your attention and
never become background music." -

"I really love the bass. Few people are aware of its capabilities, its myriad of hidden depths and the many possibilities for sensitivities it possesses. It is obvious that Jennifer Moore (aka Single Bass) knows this. For armed with just a bass guitar and a voice she produces a whole range of musical emotions via lucid lyrics and astoundingly articulate basslines. Her musicianship is beyond question. With a technical skill that is breathtakingly excellent and a canny understanding of groove, Be Your Friend is not just a collection of bass playing techniques - no masturbatory muso fantasy - but a genuine assortment of real songs expressing a solid songwriting talent. This combination of a killer slap/tap style, delicate chordal harmonies and an acute sense of melody makes Single Bass a must. Bassists will blub and music lovers rejoice when they hear the total talent of Single Bass." - Overall (Nottingham)
"It might sound boring to say that all the thirteen songs
on this album feature only Jennifer's voice and bass playing -
no other accompaniment - but, believe me, it ain't!
Not only does she have a lovely voice, she is also an
exceptionally gifted songwriter, and a very innovative
bass player. In the latter respect, she makes fine use
of the very wide range of beautiful bell-like harmonics
obtainable on a bass guitar, together with chords, a
touch of echo here and there, not to mention a bit of
"slapping"! Her lyrics really are superb - by turns
joyful, sorrowful, wistful, amusing, frightening...
but always interesting.
"I really think this is a superb album and, whilst
it will not be everyone's cup of tea, I cannot
recommend it highly enough to those with an ear
for quality." - Feedback

Be Your Friend album audio samples are available here as MP3. All the MP3s are between 100kb and 262kb.
These clips are only little fragments of the songs (between 20 seconds and about a minute, depending on the song), to give you an idea of the
sort of thing it is. The point is to encourage you to buy the album (or, indeed, discourage you if you wouldn't like it)

All songs copyright Jennifer Moore 1991
My faves on this album are Be your friend and Denial
and maybe After love. I've gone off Bad
(only 'cause of some of the words, still a great slappedy bappy
bass line though) and I've gone off Some other girl (bit
sentimental for my taste nowadays - not to dis it though 'cause
some people still love it).
But the one that got the most votes from everyone else is Letterbox.
